Numerous abuses in the system of government business grants exist. Ridiculous amounts of small business grants are appropriated to ill thought out schemes, harebrained abuses, many purely for self aggrandizement. This is a plea for only potential government grant applicants whose sincere interest is to make a significant difference, to apply.
Sincerity counts: "The Rockin'Magicians Sports Association, a Harlem-based program, sent in an application that was full of sentence fragments and other errors that should guarantee flunking a high school freshman English class. But their grammar was close enough for government work. They got the grant." -Investors Business Daily, Thursday, November 8,2001 (talking about Clintons' AmeriCorps push to boosting the number of members from 50,000 to 259,000)
The General Accounting Office notes that AmeriCorps (only one example of small business government grants) "generally reports the result of its programs and activities by quantifying the amount of services AmeriCorps participants perform." They criticize the program for "failing to measure the program's actual results." What is needed are go-getters with a plan and a purpose.
